FIBROSIS SUPPRESSING DRUG DELIVERY SILICONE IMPLANTS

The number of breast reconstruction and augmentation surgeries increased over the past decades. Most of the surgeries are conducted by inserting silicone implants. However, insertion of a foreign object into our body usually induces immune reaction and causes severe fibrosis around the implant.

In order to suppress the side effect, patients are prescribed with oral drugs for at most a year. The long period of drug administration brings economic burden and potential side effects of the drugs to the patients.

Our research team is developing silicone implants with drug delivery so that no administration of oral drugs is required.
